Reading scheme by BDL books

-

BDL Books has just launched the Aqra Aktar scheme. This scheme encourages reading among students in primary and secondary schools by awarding them with a voucher for every book that they borrow and read, upon returning it to their school or class library.

The Aqra Aktar scheme is fully supported by the National Literacy Agency, the Ministry for Education and Employment and the Secretariat for Catholic Education. It is already being implemented in a good number of Church and Independent Schools and their students are benefiting from the scheme. Aqra Aktar was launched in State primary schools on 27 March 2017 during an event held at Mġarr primary school, for which Education Minister Evarist Bartolo was present. In the coming weeks, the scheme is also going to be implemented in State middle and secondary schools. In his speech, the Minister emphasised the importance of reading, through which children imagine and experience new worlds full of adventures, dreams and discoveries. He also said that reading helps children to enhance their creative skills and increase their knowledge of life and the world.

The scheme has the motto ilqari jippremjak – reading is rewarding. This is because, besides the fact that reading endows children with knowledge and helps them in their education, the scheme also offers an added incentive to further promote reading, by rewarding the students with a €1 voucher for every book that they read and return to the library. Students can then use this voucher when buying new books from BDL Books, San Ġwann, thus encouraging them to read more.
