Mosta win title after defeating Wardija
Mosta are the new champions of the MSV Life Masters Premier League, after beating Wardija 7-4 in a hard fought match.
Wardija were still with a chance to win the title, but found the Mosta team more determined.
Mosta deserved the title. They were the most consistent and they lost only one game from 16. They played entertaining football under the guidance of coach Charles Agius and with some experienced players such as captain Jeffrey Chetcuti, Stefan Sultana, Paul Bugeja, Ibrahim Tarik, Pio Scriha and others. They combined well to become a formidable squad.
The game with Wardija was most interesting. Up to the end of the first half, it was evrybody’s game finishing 2-2.
After the break, Wardija went in front 3-2, but Mosta soon came back with four consecutive goals, led by some good ones from Tarik. Then they controlled well and closed all alleys for the Wardija forwards to go on to win 7-4.
Top scorer of the league, Wardija’s Michael Borg Olivier could only score two. He was given great attention by the Mosta defenders, but he was also denied several times by Mirchev with some fantastic saves.
Dingli Desana danced around the B’Kara players winning 17-4 to go second in the standings.
They now need only a draw in their last game against Wardija to secure second place and be eligible to take part in the new competition, the KIA Motors Super Cup. They were superior against a team with several established playes missing.
A new scoring record with 14 goals in one game was achieved by Jeffrey Gauci, who now also took over as the best scorer in the second phase with 17.
Rabat Cavette secured fourth place after beating Marsa White Stars 7-6 in a balanced game, the winning goal beng scored in the last minutes.
In the Coca Cola Division One league, Valletta beat Tal-Qroqq 98, but they did not find it easy. They were down 6-2 going for the break, but they were a changed side in the second half, well marshalled by the experienced ex Valletta and Malta player Nardu Farrugia who was making his debut in the Masters League.
His accurate passing was a delight to watch. Valletta scored six goals to lead 8-6, but then held on to win.
In the meantime, Zabbar St Patrick just managed to beat Melita 7-6 to go top again. Zabbar had to play with only five players when their goalkeeper Mauro Valestro was shown the red card. STANDINGS PREMIER - 39 Mosta, 35 Dingli, 33 Wardija, 30 Rabat, 22 Marsa WS, 17 B’Kara
