Race Two of downhill series sees new faces on podium

Yamaha Gozo Motocross Associatio­n Championsh­ip finals on Sunday

The introducti­on of additional technical adjustment­s to the already fast, free flowing and twisty trails that Selmun’s clay slopes offer put mountain bikers’ abilities to the limit during the recently held Downhill Race organised by the Malta Mountain Bike Associatio­n as part of its National Point Series.

In an all-male dominated race, places were vied for in the Elite, Open and Masters Categories. As is the norm, the race saw cyclists undertake two qualifying runs, the resulting time of which establishe­s the starting grid for the race, where the fastest rider takes last spot on the starting gate.

In the Elite Category, Race 1 winner Matthew Gauci had to settle for second place when Mark Zammit, who in the previous race failed to make the podium clinched top billing.

Similarly, it was Robert Magro who stormed into third place. Jake Galea, took top billing in the Open Category, going up one place from the previous race. With previous podium winners

The Finals of the Yamaha Gozo Motorcross Associatio­n 2016/17 will take place at Ta’ Xħajma Track, next Sunday, 14th May. Races started at 1pm.

An exciting and challengin­g season of racing will come to an end as riders now continue to excel at their own respective placing.

Following the programm of racing, celebratio­ns will be taking Andrew Caruana and Darel Cauchi out of the fray for the second race, top places were taken by Clint Sciberras and Robert Guzman.

Similarly, in the Masters Category, Kenneth Galea went up to first place, having secured a second place in the previous race. Second and third placings were taken up by John Micallef and Harold Psaila.

With three more races to go, the fight for an overall title is far from over. The next race of the Series is scheduled to take place on Saturday 13th May from 3pm onwards. The Race will take place in Dwejra, Malta and the track commences with a rock section leading to a high speed single track, a flattish area requires some pedalling mid-way prior to heading towards another high speed section towards the finish.

The Downhill National Points Series is being supported by HSN Signs, Wheel Wizard, Pro Action, Dacoby Chauffeur Services, Epic No Limits. place to crown the new Gozitan MotoX Champion16/17.

The riders will be awarded winning tropheys of the day. All riders will be given a token of participat­ion while a special trophey will be given to the Best Rider 2017. The Frank Bruno Motocross Award 2017 will be given to the rider who showed the most dedication and discipline towards the sport.
