Strong start for Malta at GSSE

Maltese cyclists gave Malta its first medals in the 2017 GSSE after both the men’s and women’s selection achieved a podium position in the team competitio­n.

On the first day of competitio­ns, the Maltese athletes managed to win a total of six medals: one gold by Charlotte Wingfield in the women’s 100m, silver in Raffa, silver in swimming for Michael Umnov, another silver for the toman’s road racing cycling team and a bronze for the men in the same category, and another bronze medal in swimming for Andrew Chetcuti.

This is the third gold in these competitio­ns for Charlotte Wingfield, after her brace in both the 100m and the 200m in the last edition of two years ago held in Iceland.

The first wins of the day were registered by David and Stefan Farrugia in Raffa (Boules) won their first match against Montenegro and Liechtenst­ein.

Hopes for a gold were dashed when they lost to San Marino but quickly fought back against Luxembourg winning with a score of 12-0 to claim Silver in the Doubles Category.

Stephanie Alden, Marie Claire Aquilina and Michelle Vella Wood placed second overall in the women’s team event.

On the other hand, Maurice Formosa, Etienne Bonello, James Mifsud and Alexander Petett settled for he bronze medal in the men’s category behind gold medallists San Marino and Andorra who placed second.

Later on in swimming, Mikhail Umnov clinched silver medal in the 200m butterfly.

Meanwhile, Young Mya Azzopardi broke a long standing record in the 200m medley this morning in Serravalle when she clocked a time of 2:27,57. Mya will now proceed to the finals in this category.
