Gold medal for Gianluca Chetcuti in Double Trap
The third gold medal for Malta at the Small Nations Games 2017 taking place in San Marino, following that by Charlotte Wingfield in athletics and th gold won by the women’s basketball team, came from young aspiring star shooter Gianluca Chetcuti in the double trap competition.
Gianluca Chetcuti managed a total of 69 hits, followed closely by the two Cypriots Leontios Leontiou and Djovanis Savvides, who managed a score of 48 and 48 respectively.
The other Maltese competitor, William Chetcuti, finished in fourth place with a total of 39 hits. this came as a surprise, since William Chetcuti had dominated the qualification earlier on in the morning.
During the qualification, after 5 rounds of 30 blanks, William Chetcuti was at the front with a total of 134 out of 150 blanks. Cianluca Chetcuti qualified second witha total of 120 blanks.
The qualification for the skeet competition also took place yesterday. After three rounds of 25 blanks, Clive Farrugia is temporarily third with 67 hits, three less than shooters who are tied in first place.
The other Maltese shooter, Bozhidar Dimitrov, placed 7th with 62 hits.
Five medals for Maltese tennis players
The adventure of the Maltese tennis players finished with a total of five medals: one silver and four bronze.
After the bronze each of Francesca Curmi and Elaine Genovese in the women’s singles, and the bronze to the couple Matthew Asciak and Elaine Genovese in the mixed doubles, today they received another two medals.
Elaine Genovese and Francesca Curmi played the final of the women’s doubles against couple Maria Siopacha and Serban Raluka from Cyprus, but had to make to with the silver medal after losing 62, 6-4.
In the semifinal for men’s doubles, Matthew Asciak and Omar Sudzuka were given little chance by the pair from Luxembourg Thomas Oger and Florent Diep, who won rather easily 6-1, 6-0.
Swimming
Maltese swimmers were in action again yesterday in three different competitions. Thomas Wareing and Mikhail Umnov both took part in the men’s 400m medley final. Wareing missed a medal spot by a whisker when he placed fourth with a time of 4:45:82. Umnov did not start the race.
Later on, in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, the Maltese team placed in 7th place with a time of 4:03:23.
The last Maltese competitors to enter the pool were the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, who finished in third place with a time of 3:28:88, thus gaining another medal, bronze, for Malta.
