MESA contingent taking part in Ghent Games

Clifton Grima, the new Parliament­ary Secretary for Youth and Sport, promised the full support to the Maltese athletes participat­ing in the 21st edition of the European Company Sport Games that will take place between 21 and 25 June in Ghent, Belgium.

He stated that it is important that employees keep themselves active through sports. He maintained that the government is committed to assist in the growth of participat­ion and encouraged companies to join MESA so that more employees can participat­e in activities organised during the year.

Mark Cutajar, CEO of Sportmalta said that such initiative­s are supported since these occasions contribute to a healthier and more active society that is in line with SportMalta’s mission.

He augured success to all participat­ing athletes.

Twenty one different sports discipline­s will be offered during the Games organised bi-annually by the European Federation for Company Sports (EFCS), namely:

Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volley, Bowling, Bridge, Chess, Cycling, Darts, Football (5-a-side, 7-a-side, 11-aside), Golf, Handball, Mini-Golf, Orienteeri­ng, Padel, Petanque, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball.

There are 39 European countries affiliated to the EFCS where Malta is represente­d by the Malta Employees Sport Associatio­n (MESA).

Malta took part for the first time in the 20th edition of the European Company Sport Games held in Riccione, Italy, in June 2015 achieving very positive results by winning two gold medals and one bronze medal in Darts, one silver medal in Football and one bronze medal in Badminton.

Bowling BoV (Open): Alan Attard, Hubert Camilleri, James Grech, Josward Xuereb. MIA (Open): Aaron Belli, Stephen Cassar, Mario Ellul, Charles Farrugia, Charles Galea, Alfred Pulis.
