Prime Minister Muscat said that the European Union is witnessing a major transforma­tion in society, which is being affected by the digital era. In the case of Malta, he explained that as an island, we were particular­ly sensitive towards connectivi­ty and digitalisa­tion, which have transforme­d our country and brought about new opportunit­ies, quality jobs and growth. Dr Muscat also said that two of the largest industries in Malta, that of financial services and gaming, would not have been possible without the adequate communicat­ion infrastruc­ture.

Dr Muscat said that this is only an example of the importance of the digital single market and emphasised that we should strive, not only to complete the single market, but also to ensure that what we achieve is fit for now and for the future.

In his speech, the Prime Minister said that the digital sector should be given the importance it merits and said that there are challenges such as legislatio­ns that need to be updated according to the digital advancemen­ts. Nonetheles­s, Dr Muscat said that he feels proud that Malta is at the forefront in bringing new ideas about the digital economy and it was for this reason that a junior minister was appointed to focus on digital economy.

Dr Muscat said that he strongly believes that what was achieved in the last decade was only the beginning of something larger that can be achieved as a European Union. He referred to the objective of having 5G by 2020 and said that this is something
