Paul Muscat wins his first Motocross championsh­ip title

The Assocjazzj­oni Sport Muturi u Karozzi (ASMK) held a busy evening where several events were organised at the ASMK Sports Complex at Ta’ Qali.

Saturday evening saw the participat­ion of ASMK sections which included the Motocross and Trials riders together with the Autocross cars. For this event 48 competitor­s were registered and divided into their respective discipline­s.

Meanwhile the ASMK organised the motocross the last event of this season where in Class A the Muscat brothers dominated on the MX track. Paul Muscat was able to win the first Heat while in the second Heat he finished in second place thus closing the day in the first position. Paul Muscat was followed by his brother Trevor Muscat both on KTM motorcycle­s. Third place was won by David Dimech on a Honda motorcycle.

James Zahra on Sherco won Class B followed by Bernard Sammut on a Husqvarna and Robert Spiteri on a Yamaha. Class C was dominated by Joe Azzopardi on a Yamaha followed by Luke Sheldon on a Kawasaki.

In the Veterans Class Paul Deguara, on a KTM, was the winner followed by brothers Sant, William on a Suzuki and Jethro on a Yamaha. Louis Debono won fourth place riding a Yamaha motorcycle.

The associatio­n officially announced that Paul Muscat, on a KTM, won the ASMK National Motocross Championsh­ip sponsored by ASMK and Pasta Poiatti 2016/2017.

During this season Muscat was able to win six races out of eight and he finished second in one race and fourth in another thus winning a total of 373 points in this championsh­ip. Muscat was declared a championsh­ip winner for the first time. He is followed by David Dimech in 2nd overall on a Honda motorcycle with 306 championsh­ip points.

Other Motocross classifica­tions that were closed on this Saturday is Class B which hosted riders who are intending to move forward to Class A in the coming season. Class B Championsh­ip winner is Ryan Faenza on a Yamaha motorcycle who won this class with a good points advantage.

Ryan collected 339 points and was followed by Mark Mamo on a Yamaha motorcycle with 145 points. The Veterans class, which was launched this year for the first time, was a success and drew a number of older riders to participat­e during this season.

Sant brothers, William and Jethro, dominated this class with William winning 359 points on his Suzuki. Jethro Sant on a Yamaha is 2nd in this class with 352 points.

In the meantime, the Trials competitio­n was also held on the same evening at the ASMK Sport Complex.

In Class A Damon Bonello, on a Gas Gas, emerged winner while Rowen Bonello on Beta followed in 2nd place. Third place winner was Sicilian rider Antonio Leonardi on his Gas Gas motorcycle.

In Class B young Daniel Inguanez, on his Beta motorcycle, continued dominating by winning this class. Tony Curmi followed in 2nd place on his Beta motorcycle. Next Trials event is scheduled to take place on Saturday 15 July at the Qrendi TalMaghlaq Quarry. This activity starts at 4pm and day members are welcome.

The Autocross Section has organised the 10th event of the 2016/2017 championsh­ip from the total of 12 events.

In the Modified Class, the final saw Andrew Pisani on Vauxhall Nova winning this 9 laps race ahead of Jean Paul Grech on his Peugeot 106. Third place went to Vince Farrugia on his VW Polo.

In the Class B final, Philip Joe Vella, on his Opel Corsa, was the overall winner with Noel Zammit followed on his Fiat Punto. Third place went to Chris Aquilina on an Opel Corsa.

In the Autocross Standard Class it was Johann Vella on an Opel Nova to win this race followed by Deane Farrugia on his Citroen AX while Nicovich Chircop on his Peugeot 106 won 3rd place.

The associatio­n will continue the next two events in the coming Saturday evenings. Today ASMK will be organising the 11th programme from the Autocross National Championsh­ip for 2016/2017. The programme starts at 8pm and continues till late under artificial lighting.
