Kappara junction flyover to open this week

-

The new flyover at the Kappara junction is expected to be opened later this week. The junction, which for years has been a source of fuming drivers and CO2 emissions from cars stuck in traffic, will soon be completely functional. In fact, in his first visit to the site, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Ian Borg had announced that the Kappara Junction will be open by end of September. The resurfacing of the bridge should be completed by end of this month.

The project, which started back in April 2016, is both on budget and on time, and the government should be able to cut the ribbon by end of this year. The project will be completed thanks to the EU Cohesion funds allocated for the years 2014-2020.

The project will cost a total of €35 million, €33 million of which derive from EU funds. According to TEN-T studies, the junction has a traffic volume of more than 90,000 vehicles a day.

Despite being a huge infrastructural project, the works did not negatively affect the traffic which flows from Birkirkara bypass, to Gżira, St Julian’s and Kappara. In fact, the traffic management proved to be efficient with no particular hindrances.

After the completion of this project, the government is set to embark on a new infrastructural project in the Marsa junction area, near the Addolorata cemetery. The Marsa junction will be much more complicated since it involves more flyovers than in Kappara.
