Christian Formosa champion for the first time

The National Road Race championsh­ip organised by the Malta Cycling Federation crowned a new champion this year.

In the Elite category, Christian (The Cyclists CC) had the great satisfacti­on of becoming the Malta champion for the first time after having been so close to doing so in recent seasons when this year he finishing on top with a total of 555 points, obtaining them from two wins in San Martin and in Tal-Maqluba and a fourth place at Ta ' Penellu.

His brother, Maurice Formosa, a member of the same club of The Cyclist CC classified in second place with a total of 490 points, Etienne Bonello of Team Greens ended third with a total of 440 points.

The female championsh­ip honour went to Michelle Vella Wood of Team Greens, confirming her very good season after also winning the silver medal in the San Marino Games for European Small Nations as she finished first with a total of 550 points. These points were acquired by winning Ta’ Penellu race and twice second in San Martin and Tal-Maqluba. In second place less 20 points behind, was the ex-champion Stephanie Alden of The Cyclist as she was also a winner of a silver medal in San Marino. Marion Pullicino Mosta AF Sign Studio CC finished third with a total of 435 points.

The successes for The Cyclist Club continued even when they won the Junior Championsh­ip where winner Nicholas Attard Montaldo finished up with a maximum of 600 points to keep the same title won last year. Teammate Isaac Spiteri finished second with 525 points, while third classified Gianluca Camilleri Birkirkara St. Joseph obtained 310 points.

The Master 40+ category was dominated by Ivan Zammit of Birkirkara St Joseph SC with three wins for a maximum total of 600 points. In second place was Kelvin Goodwin of Agones SFC with 505 points and third was Colin Tabone of Team Greens with 470 points.

The 50+ Masters Championsh­ip saw another success from a cyclist of The Cyclist team when Joseph Micallef ended in front with 575 points, while with 375 points his teammate Kenneth Zammit finished second. In third position with 175 points ended Chris Iwanik Birkirkara St Joseph SC.

Emmanuel Camilleri of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC won the Masters Championsh­ip 60+ with a maximum of 600 points winning all three races.

The championsh­ip for the Under 15’s, Kristina Spiteri (The Cyclists) gained three victories to ends of young girls champion with a maximum of 600 points. Second was former champion Veronique Pace Asciak Mosta AF Sign Studio CC gaining a total of 525 points. Nicholas Micallef, Mosta AF Sign Studio CC, finished first in the Boys category with a total of 575 points, followed by another two cyclists of the same club of Mosta where Matthew Galea Pirotta gained a total of 550 points and Malcolm Vassallo with 450 points.

The Maltese Cycling Federation thanked the timing system provider ARRTS team, who took care of the race timing and to each respective Local Council for all their cooperatio­n. Thanks also went to the Police Department who were of great assistance and as well the Malta Red Cross Operations, many volunteers as timekeeper­s and marshalls for their service.
