Selmun ambulance crash claims its second victim

An 89-year-old Mellieħa woman who was riding in an ambulance involved in a collision with a car in Selmun on Saturday morning lost her life on Saturday evening, becoming the second person to die in the tragic accident.

An English man who was riding in the passenger seat of the car lost his life on the spot.

The accident happened on Selmun Hill at around 1.20am and involved a Red Cross ambulance, driven by a 55-yearold Italian paramedic living in Mosta, and a Daihatsu Sirion driven by an English man. The Daihatsu was carrying three passengers, all English.

The 89-year-old was riding in the ambulance along with a 51-year-old woman from Mġarr, a 43-year-old man from Mellieħa and a 38-yearold woman from St Paul’s Bay. In total, six people, including the 89-year-old, were hospitalis­ed with grievous injuries.

Mater Dei Hospital later said it had chartered the Red Cross ambulance.

The death of the 89-year-old brings the total number of fatalities on Saturday to four.

In the morning, a 72-year-old man was killed when he was hit by a car on Aldo Moro Road in Marsa. The vehicle, a Citroen Cactus, was being driven by a 37-year-old man from Żabbar.

Then in the afternoon, a 78year-old woman from Rabat died after the Toyota she was travelling in crashed into a stationary Land Rover in Bieb irRuwa Street, Baħrija.

The car was being driven by a 56-year-old woman from Rabat.
