Bail for man found in possession of cannabis and cocaine

-

A 22-year-old man who was found to be in possession of drugs was granted bail after pleading not guilty to the charges.

Adrian Zammit, who lives in a garage in San Gwann, appeared before magistrate Doreen Clarke this morning facing charges related to the possession of the cannabis plant. Police inspector Gabriel Micallef explained that the amount found, more than 250 grams, showed that the drugs were not intended for his personal use. The police also found €600 in cash at the accused’s residence.

Zammit also stood charged with being in possession of cocaine and for breaching the conditions of a suspended sentence. The court also heard how the man drove a car, an MG, without being covered with the necessary road insurance and licence.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. Defence lawyer Franco Debono made a request for bail. Inspector Micallef said that his only concern was that the accused lived in a garage. He did not, however object to the request for bail. Lawyer Franco Debono argued that this is where the accused resided and should not make a difference to the prosecution, be it a villa or a garage.

The young man was granted bail and ordered to pay a deposit of €2,000 together with a personal guarantee of €10,000. The court also ordered the man to report at the St Julian’s Police station twice a week.
