VAT refund on equipment purchased for persons with disabilities
People with disabilities will now be able to claim a refund on equipment expenses under a new scheme launched by Finance Minister Edward Scicluna yesterday.
Scicluna described how severely disabled people will be able to claim their VAT refund on equipment valued up to €12,000. Eligibility for refunds varies depending on the degree to which a person is disabled. Those who have a level two disability are entitled to a VAT refund of equipment worth up to €8,000, while those with a level three disability are entitled to a refund on purchases up to €4,000.
Addressing the press, Scicluna explained that no specific equipment was targeted, but a wide array such as breathing aides and guide dogs were included.
Scicluna said that this move would act as an incentive for people with disabilities, as with the trust fund scheme and a minimum wage for all those whose condition prevents them from working.
