Maltese Sign Language interpreters

-

The Maltese Sign Language Council, together with the Deaf People Association (Malta), yesterday informed the public that professional sign language interpreting services should be made available to the Deaf community who require interpreting services in a range of settings, including education, broadcasting, media, at the law courts, and in political, administrative, economic, social and cultural life.

All service providers and employers who have deaf employees are required by law to provide Maltese Sign Language interpreters, when requested. The Maltese Sign Language Recognition Act (ACT No. XVII of 2016) of 16 March 2016, requires this accommodation.

Providing sign language interpreters ensures that deaf service users have the same access to communication and information available to hearing persons.

Maltese sign language interpreters translate from spoken language (Maltese and English) to Maltese Sign Language and vice versa. There are eight recognised sign language interpreters in Malta, all of whom have a registered interpreters' card approved by both the Maltese Sign Language Council and the Deaf People Association (Malta).

Five sign language interpreters are employed with Agenzija Sapport who offer their services in most settings without charge for Deaf service users. Freelance interpreting is also available at a fee.

You may book interpreting services with Agenzija Sapport by emailing sli.sapport@gov.mt or calling 7900 5988, or with freelance interpreters on sign.interpreting@gmail.com.
