Not in my name

- C. Grech

The Church Environment Commission not for the first time has issued a statement which jars with many. Why oppose a race track at Ta’ Qali? Weren’t the Church lands handed over to the state to be used for a social purpose? Or is this Church Environment Commission a fellow traveller with the ex-PD leader and would like motor sports enthusiasts to go to nearby Sicily to practise their sport?

At times I used to read Lefebvre publications and though I would consider some articles extreme, others pointed out that through the creation of such ‘’Commissions’’ the Church’s voice is hijacked by a small group of people with their own agenda whose views are propagated as being the Church’s own... no wonder segments of faithful are staying away even from Sunday Mass. Does this sit well with our bishops who have so much on their plates?

For the motor sports enthusiasts to rev up their vehicles ad nauseam while the MFCC July Fair was on a couple of months back was shameful, but to have them sited elsewhere may pander to one locality’s ‘not in my back yard’ syndrome but discounts the fact that Ta’ Qali can accommodate such leisure activities without creating undue disruption.

What I would suggest is a rethink by Transport Malta in again allowing crossing over to Ta’ Qali access road from Mdina Road rather than having to go all the way to the Żebbuġ/Mdina roundabout and back, creating more traffic mayhem.

On such subjects, however, the Church’s Commission remains mum, even though it is not unheard of one of the precious priests losing his life partially due to substandard roads or traffic management.
