Qormi grab first points with Yankam header

- Marsa: Qormi: Referee:

Marsa Qormi 2 3

A Yankam header fifteen minutes from time proved to be the winner for Qormi yesterday as they defeated Marsa in a highly entertaining game. The match had a brilliant start with four goals scored inside the first 22 minutes. Qormi deserved the voctory as they were the better team all round and created the better chances, but Marsa gave a very good account of themselves too and fought till the end to snatch a point.

The frist twenty minutes were breath taking to say the least with four great goals scored. Qormi started on the offensive and after barely two minutes play Caetano Da Silva’s shot passed in front of goal but there was no one able to connect.

On ten minutes Matombo crosssed from the right and da Silva headed wide with an open goal at his mercy. Against the run of play Marsa took the lead on 16 minutes when Charles Newuche scored a gem of a goal from over thirty meters with Qormi goalkeeper Jamie Azzopardi caught out of position.

But Marsa’s joy was shortlived as sixty seconds later Qormi drew level when Lubos Adamec headed home a Matombo corner kick. Qormi surged forward for more but were unlucky a minute later when Caetano Da Silva was put through by Yankam but his scorcher slammed against the crossbar.

On 21 minutes Qormi took a deserved lead with yet another great goal. Once again it was the exNaxxar defender Lubos Adamec who scored a majestic goal direct from a freekick from around 35 meters.

But sixty seconds later Marsa were back in business with another great goal. Emerson Bonello crossed from the right and Mark Gauci first timed beautifully in the top corner of the net.

The game tired out after this initial fury even though Qormi always held the initiative. On the resumption the match continued on the same wavelength with Qormi always having the edge. They were rewarded on 74 minutes when from a corner action Yannick Yankam headed home from close range.

Qormi should have sealed the match four minutes from time but Brandon Grech’s shot from close range was somehow blocked by Galea.
