Easy win for Mosta against Mellieħa

The final result is a clear indication that there was only one team in the game.

So dominant were Mosta that Mellieħa did not create one action during the whole 70 minutes of the game and did not manage one single shot at goal.

The rout began as early as the 7th minute as Gianluca Tanti served Julian Borg with a cross from the left flank and he scored with a rising shot from inside the area past Mellieħa keeper Aidan Borg Lupan, and two minutes later Owen Sammut entered the area sfter dribbling past two opponents and scored with a low drive to make it 2-0.

Borg Lupan then saved a shot by Liam Costa and also saved in two attempts a shot by Nichail Muscat after he pounced on a faulty goal kick.

Between the 21st and 30th minutes Mosta added scored three more goals.

Muscat scored with a hard drive from inside the area after a run down the left flank.

Sammut scored with a hard first-timer after a right flank cross by Muscat and Liam Costa scored with a header after a perfect right flank cross by Moustafa Robert Malool.

The second period was also dominated by Mosta.

Mark Cutajar released Liam Briffa in the area and after Borg partly saved his shot the ball was cleared on the line from the rebound shot by Costa.

Borg then saved a free kck by Sammut after Muscat was fouled outside the area and a flag kick by Sammut was cleared to another corner.

In the 48th minute the score became 6-0 as Muscat set Malool free on the right flank and from his cross Costa netted with a hard drive from inside the area.

Borg then saved to a corner a shot by Costa from inside the area after he was put through in the area by Briffa.

Tanti dribbled past an opponent on the left flank who then crossed to Muscat in the area who netted with a low drive to make it 7-0 and just before the final whistle Briffa controlled the ball from a long clearance in his own half of the field and after entering the area he scored No. 8 with a low shot.

Deserved win for Rabat

Rabat fully deserved the verdict as they were the better outfit by playing methodical football.

Following this win they will now cross swords against Birkirkara in the first round of the Knock Out Competitio­n.

In the first action by Rabat Robbie Fenech served Tristan Schembri with a through ball but Jake Grech foiled him with a perfect timely tackle while at the other end Lamine Chokoroba served Lennon Pickard in the area and a defender cleared the ball to a corner.

Rabat threatened again as Andre Debattista released Aydan Zammit in the area who drove slightly out.

A one-two between Gabriele Guergio and Chokoroba finished with the latter driving slightly over the bar with Rabat keeper Gabriel Gauci beaten.

Rabat then resumed with their pressing. Fenech served Debattista with a through ball and Marsaskala keeper Zack Cocker saved his shot in two attempts from the distance.

Shylon Vella served Fenech in the area and a defender cleared the ball on the line from his shot.

In the 26th minute Rabat opened the score when Schembri served Zammit with a square pass in the area who scored with a hard low drive, and in the last action before the break Schembri served Zammit with a through ball in the area and Coker saved his shot to a corner.

Five minutes after the restart Marsaskala equalised when Elton Cachia dribbled past an opponent on the left flank and scored with a hard drive after entering the area. Two actions were then ceated by Rabat.

After a Shylon Vella flag kick Tristan Schembri missed the upright by a header from inside the area and Debattista served Zammit with a through ball and Marsaskala keeper Cocker saved his distant shot in two attempts.

Rabat regained their slender lead in the 48th minute when Tristan Schembri entered the area after dribbling past an opponent and scored with a diagonal drive. Encouraged by this goal Rabat resumed with their pressing.

Zammit was fouled just outside the area and from the free kick by Vella, Cocker was forced to fist the ball away to safety. Zammit served Fenech in the area and a defender cleared the ball to a corner.

In the second minute of added time Rabat put the issue beyond ant doubt.

Fenech released Tristan Schembri in the area who made the most of the keeper’s faulty sortie who failed to neutralise the ball and Schembri scored with a low drive into an empty net.
