St George’s Bay cleaned

-

As part of the national clean-up day on the 16th of September, the NGO, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) took responsibility of St. George’s Bay.

“Though the beach and streets are cleaned regularly and fall under the remit of the local council, students and partygoers throw their bottles and cans over railings and into the fields around the beach itself. That part of the bay is unfortunately not cleaned,” FAA said.

Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar was not alone in this endeavour. Exalco, which will be opening the Golden Mile building, is one of FAA’s sponsors and was one of the first local businesses to pitch in to the joint effort.

“The St. George’s Bay area has long been a victim of unbridled fanfare and excessive noise and partying. There is little enforcement of the law in certain areas, and drug use is one of many issues faced by residents and businesses alike. FAA stepped in to take responsibility this year, while also taking the opportunity to raise awareness about the issues facing the community of the area, while assisting them directly.”

The clean-up effort also saw FAA and local businesses tackle Moynihan House and the barracks behind it. “Moynihan House has a proud history behind it, but is scheduled for demolition. As a sign of solidarity with residents and local businesses, and to raise awareness about the value of this cultural icon, FAA cleaned up around Moynihan House despite its possible fate. By beautifying the outside, FAA hopes to remind the public of how appealing and iconic a landmark Moynihan House is. It was home to Captain Andrew Moynihan was a holder of the Victoria Cross and his son, 1st Baron Sir Berkeley Moynihan, was a famous and accomplished surgeon.

By contributing to these efforts, FAA and the businesses in the area have showed their solidarity with residents. FAA encourages proper enforcement of the law in the area and an expanded responsibility of the local council over areas which are currently not being seen to by cleaners.”
