Malta Red Cross welcomes proposed Good Samaritan Law
The Malta Red Cross has welcomed the discussion of the Good Samaritan law and congratulated the first step taken in this direction.
PN MPs had presented a Private Members Bill, proposing the introduction of the internationally recognised a Good Samaritan legislation.
The aim is to give legal protection to people who assist people in danger, including through the administration of first aid.
“The Society has provided First Aid Training to thousands of individuals over the years. Questions related to liability and legal consequences are always asked by participants in almost every course,” the Red Cross said.
“We need to avoid having people looking the other way when others need help, which is why the Malta Red Cross has always been sensitive to the importance for the legal protection of persons who deliver lifesaving first aid and rescue. Unfortunately, to date there has been a lacuna in our laws which do not guarantee this protection.”
The Society submitted two proposals to be included in the law. The first is cover for everyone, even those who are not trained in First Aid.
The second, is the right to refuse delivering first aid and rescue if there is danger for the first aider or rescuer.
“Furthermore, we need to make sure that the law is not used as protection by those whose behaviour is reckless, negligent or outright malicious.
“We look forward to actively participate in any consultation processes that we will be invited to.”
