Serbia, Iceland also qualify Italy, Ireland, Croatia make it to the play-offs

Serbia and Iceland booked their places in next year’s finals in Russia after winning their final qualifying encounter to win Group D and Group I respective­ly.

Serbia defeated Georgia 1-0 to make sure of winning the Group, while Iceland beat Kosovo 2-0 in Reykjavik to assure themselves of finishing top of their group.

They joined the already qualified, Germany, Belgium, Poland, England and Spain into next year’s finals.

Prijovic scored Serbia’s winner on the 74th minute, while Iceland made sure with a goal in each half. Sigurdsson gave them the lead on 40 minutes and Gudmundsso­n added the second goal in the 68th.

Spain, who had already made sure of finishing top of Group G, were made to fight hard by a lively Israel side.

It was a 76th minute goal by Illarramen­di which gave Spain the winner.

Italy, Ireland and Croatia made sure of reaching the play-offs – the final chance to qualify for next year’s finals.

Italy had a somewhat tough time before eventually overcoming Albania 1-0 thanks to a Candreva goal on 73 minutes. The precious win made them top seeds in the play-off draw.

Croatia finished second in Group I after beating direct rivals Ukraine 2-0.

This was a tough clash as both sides were equal on points and it seemed to be like a World Cup final. At the end, it was Croatia who triumphed 2-0 with second half goals from Kramaric (62 and 70 minutes).

Ireland also earned a place in the play-offs as they beat Wales in a direct clash in Cardiff. It was McClean who scored the all-important goal on 57 minutes.

In other matches, Finland and Turkey drew 2-2 with Tosun giving the Turks the lead and with Arajuuri equalising for the Finns on the 76th minute. Tosun gave Turkey the lead again on 83 minutes, but Pohjanpalo managed to equalise for Finland near the end.

And Austria defeated Moldova 1-0 thanks to a goal from Schaub in the 69th minute.

The best victory was registered by Macedonia who beat Liechtenst­ein 4-0.
