Peter Azzopardi, Gianella Bugeja win Kirkop-Safi 5km race

Bank of Valletta athlete Peter Azzopardi won the 5 kilometre race organized on Friday, 17th November by the Malta Employees Sports Associatio­n (MESA) on the Kirkop-Safi circuit.

Azzopardi won in 17 minutes and 37 seconds, followed in second place by Adrian Mifsud (SVPR Health) who trailed Azzopardi by 25 seconds to finish the race in 18 minutes and 2 seconds. David Cassar (Civil Protection Department) was third in 18 minutes and 15 seconds.

Azzopardi went in front right from the start of the race with Mifsud keeping close for quite a distance, but with less than a kilometre to go the BOV runner increased his lead to win the race comfortabl­y.

Gianella Bugeja (Transport Malta) was dominant in the ladies category, winning in 19 minutes and 29 seconds and finishing more than one and a half minutes ahead of second placed Angele Sammut (Health Department) who covered the distance in 21 minutes and 6 second. Maressa Zahra (NAO) finished third in 23 minutes and 39 seconds.

The team event was won by Health Department (Adrian Mifsud, Melvin Mifsud and Angele Sammut) with a total time of 57 minutes and 42 seconds, followed by Transport Malta (Gianella Bugeja, David Sammut and Mark Farrugia) in second place, while Civil Protection Department (David Cassar, Joseph Barbieri and Leslie Camilleri) placed third.
