‘Kenniesa tal-Kabinett’ holds small demonstration ‘reminding’ Keith Schembri to meet with MEPs

-

An activist group called Kenniesa tal-kabinett held a small demonstration yesterday morning outside the Office of the Prime Minister to remind him that “we are on the case”.

The group claims that the prime minister’s assistant Keith Schembri ignored yet another invitation by the European Parliament to meet with MEPs and discuss his involvement in the Panama Papers revelations.

It was discovered that Schembri along with Minister Konrad Mizzi each held a secret Panama company sheltered by a New Zealand trust. Both claim no wrongdoing.

“The more frustrated we get, the more we fight. Keith Schembri is not someone the people voted for, yet our Prime Minister re appointed him Chief of Staff after his having appeared in the Panama Papers,” the group wrote.

MEPs will be in Malta on Thursday on a two-day fact-finding mission. It is expected that they will request meetings with the Prime Minister, Schembri, the Police Commissioner and the Attorney General.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has already said he is willing to engage with MEPs.

The group concluded by saying that the retention of Schembri after his involvement in the Panama Papers amounted to a government message that one may “be a crook, and [may] get promoted in this government”.
