Game decided by an own goal

-

Mosta 1 St Andrew 0

St Andrew were the better outfit during the whole game by creating much more occasions than Mosta but they failed to turn their superiority into goals and the Mosta rearguard was kept very busy dealing with their incessant attacks.

In a Mosta attack, Leon Zammit dribbled past an opponent on the right flank but after advancing the ball sailed slightly over the bar from his cross.

Three more actions were then mounted by St Andrew. Alexander Satariano was was fouled on the right flank and the free kick by Jamie Sixsmith was cleared away with much difficulty.

Muscat then released Veselji in the area but Mosta keeper Dylan Ciappara saved his shot in two attempts and Jordan Kelly served Matteo Sansone in the area but he missed the upright by inches.

In the 20th minute, against the run of play, Mosta opened the score as they won a corner kick on the right flank which was taken by Matteo Vella and from his high cross in the area St Andrew defender Andrea Cireddu had the misfortune to deflect the ball into his own net past a helpless keeper Sebastian Spiteri.

The pressure by St Andrew resumed. In the 22nd minute Muscat served Veselji in the area and as he was pushed from behind, the referee pointed to the penalty spot but the same player drove over the bar from the spot. Muscat then crossed the ball in the area after dribbling past an opponent on the right flank but Ciappara neutralised the ball in two attempts.

Kelly was then fouled on the right edge of the area and Ciappara tipped the ball over the bar from Sixsmith’s free kick.

The second period was also dominated by St Andrew as Mosta created only one action. Veselji was fouled outside the area and Sixsmith’s free kick created havoc in the area but the ball was cleared away with difficulty.

St Andrew were denied by the woodwork in the 62nd minute when Lee Attard was fouled on the left edge of the area but after Veselji’s free kick the ball thumped the bar from a close range header by Cireddu with Ciappara completely beaten.

In the only action by Mosta in the 68th minute Zammit entered the area after dribblng past an opponent and Spiteri saved his low shot.
