Labour to defend Malta’s sovereignty at the European Parliament, Sant pledges
Labour Party MEPs will stand united to defend Malta’s sovereignty, especially on taxation matters, PL MEP Alfred Sant pledged yesterday, adding that they will fight against the wave of criticism in Europe on financial services in small states like Malta.
Sant was addressing a social gathering in Valletta. Sant said that Labour MEPs will persist in protecting the flexibility of small EU states like Malta, and insists that the EU’s “one-size-fits-all” policy does not benefit Malta.
Sant said that in 2017 Malta managed the EU’s Presidency with honours and left a positive impact on the EU.
“Malta’s Prime Minister has distinguished himself among EU leaders, the Maltese government is securing economic and social progress among the EU’s strongest member states, while labour representatives at the European Parliament have remained close to the Maltese and Gozitan citizens, voicing their concerns and aspirations.”
Sant said that to the contrary, the PN delegation at the European Parliament has been undermining national interests.
“The PN MEPs have now agreed that Malta should lose its sovereignty on taxation. All Maltese governments, including the Gonzi administration, always safeguarded Malta’s sovereignty on taxation. The PN MEPs think otherwise,” Sant remarked.
