Puppies abandoned in Gozo

● Gozo SPCA sees influx of abandoned puppies

-

The Gozo SPCA has taken in nine puppies in just seven weeks, a representative from the organisation has confirmed.

Two of those puppies, found last week, were certified as suffering from canine parvovirus, resulting in the death of one, while the other had to be put down.

The representative confirmed that while it was not unusual for the Gozo SPCA to have so many puppies, the short space in which they were found is a departure from the norm.

Just a few days before Christmas, the SPCA was alerted to a mother and her three pups – found to be just two days old – roaming around Għajnsielem. The pups, named Bailey, Terri and Timmy, are now seven weeks old and fully vaccinated.

Just last week, another two puppies, this time without a mother, were found abandoned at Ramla l-Ħamra. Jack and Jill were thought to be just seven weeks old when they were found wandering the streets.

Yesterday morning, the Gozo SPCA received another surprise when two more puppies – Riley and Rusty – were found in a cardboard box in Xemxija.

The SPCA is also caring for another two five-month-old puppies named Sasha and Rexy, which were abandoned in 2017.

Currently, the Gozo SPCA is caring for nine puppies and a small adult dog which live together in the facility’s upstairs kennels, while another three large dogs live in the downstairs facilities.

All dogs and puppies have been dutifully vaccinated and have had their medical needs tended to.

Interested and responsible pet-owners are welcome to contact the organisation. Additionally, looking after puppies and adult dogs does not come cheap, so anybody interested in donating funds to help in the running of the Gozo SPCA can make a donation via the information provided on its Facebook page or can do so via Pay-Pal through its website http://www.gozo-spca.org.
