Real Madrid crash out of Copa del Rey in shock defeat

-

Real Madrid have crashed out of the Copa del Rey at the quarterfinal stage.

La Liga’s 12-placed side shocked the Bernabeu when they took the lead on the half-hour mark Javier Eraso drilled home from the edge of the box.

Misfiring forward Karim Benzema then netted an equaliser one minute after half-time after latching onto Lucas Vazquez’s through ball.

But the visitors responded by taking a grip of the tie when Gabriel Pires headed home Eraso’s cross.

Real, with the likes of Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric in their starting XI, were unable to find the elusive equaliser.

So Los Blancos exited the cup by away goal rules after the scores ended 2-2 on aggregate.

Meanwhile, Two penalty saves by goalkeeper Jaume Domenech helped Valencia to defeat Alaves 3-2 in a shootout and advance to the Copa del Rey semifinals yesterday.

A 2-1 win by Alaves in regulation time of the second leg evened the series at 3-3 on aggregate.

Domenech then stopped shots by Alfonso Pedraza and forward Hernan Perez to send Valencia through to the last four for the second time in three seasons.

Alaves forward Ruben Sobrino, who scored in both matches, missed the decisive penalty by sending the ball over the crossbar at Mendizorroza Stadium.

Domenech made both saves by diving to his left on low shots.
