The Malta AAA Track and Field season kicked off on Saturday at the Matthew Micallef St John Stadium at Marsa with the first of a series of Winter Preseason Meetings.

Despite the rainy conditions, there was a good turnout of 140 athletes in the various age-categories and perhaps the most keenly contested events of the afternoon were the

60m races in the Men Open and Women Open categories.

In the Open Men’s 60m, the young Jacob Elaida of Starmax AC snatched first place in a swift time of 6.97, while twin brother Omar, another Starmax AC product, was second in 7.05. Third place in a time of 7.08 went to another promising youngster Nassim Dardouri of All-comers Aloysians.

In the Women’s 60m, Sarah Busuttilof Rush AC was a clear winner in a strong time of 7.84. She was followed by Janet Richard of St Patrick’s AC in 7.95 while Carla Scicluna and Claire Azzopardi, both of Pembroke AC shared third spot as they both clocked 7.99 despite running in different heats.

In the field events, Ian Paul Grech (Pembroke AC) confirmed his good streak of form by dominating the Men’s Long Jump with a winning leap of 7.11m, while Luca Martini (Rush AC) set a new Junior National Record in the Hammer with a throw of 42.48m.

Preseason Meeting 2 will be held at the Matthew Micallef St John Stadium next Saturday starting at 1.30pm.
