2018: Savio College celebrates its 50th anniversary

-

Savio College is a Catholic school founded on the educational philosophy of St John Bosco. It arose among the green fertile fields of Dingli way back in 1965, when on 20 June, Mgr Michael Gonzi blessed the foundation stone. Three years later, in October 1968, Savio College finally opened its doors and welcomed its first batch of twelve students.

Nowadays, 260 students spread across 10 forms are greeted, supported and guided to develop and grow in all spheres of their life, be it academically, physically, spiritually, emotionally and socially. With the help of a professional staff and a parents committee, the Salesian community caters for and is always on the lookout to address emerging needs and to safeguard a one-to-one approach. Savio College is also a hub of activity all year round with various summer camps, winter live-ins and retreats held for youth from all over Malta thanks to various Salesians and Salesian animators.

In 1970 the Salesian Oratory in Dingli was opened with the aim of reaching out to young people from the village of Dingli. This work still thrives. In 2003 the new sports complex was completed and in 2014 the outdoor facilities were upgraded with synthetic turf and athletic field facilities. Since 2015, the school has seen a significant face lift with new electrical and water systems, new furniture, new windows and new technology.

The Salesian family in Malta, particularly the students and staff, SavioSalesian co-operators, past pupils, Salesian animators, Dingli Oratory members and Savio Athletics Club members, will celebrate all this with a series of events.

The official opening event of Savio College’s 50th anniversary celebrations, its Salesian presence in Dingli, will be on Sunday 11 March 2018 with the commemoration of the first stone and new memorial of the 50th anniversary to Fr Joseph Mangion sdb at 10.45am, followed by a Solemn Mass at 11.00am celebrated by Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna.

After Mass, the school will be open for those present, exhibiting the latest refurbishments while also providing the opportunity for everyone to hang out and reunite once again with friends of the Salesian Family.
