Marsaxlokk back in hunt for promotion

Marsaxlokk also returned to the promotion fray when they beat bottom club Gharghur in a hard fought and extremely close encounter. Gharghur took the lead through Dudu da Lima Nicolau after 49 minutes with Trevor Cilia equalising on 65 minutes. From the kick off, Bjorn Camilleri made it 21 for Gharghur but Marsaxlokk won it through an equaliser by Antoine Barbara on 71 minutes and the winner on 90 minutes from Cleavon Frendo.

Mgarr United registered a fine victory when they defeated Luqa St Andrew’s by three goals to nil in the second match at the Centenary Stadium on Sunday. Lazar Doric scored a brace on 39 and 67 minutes with Matthew Muscat adding another in stoppage time.

Kalkara also returned to winning ways with a relatively easy 3-1 victory over St George’s. Beppe Antignolo put Kalkara ahead on the stroke of half time with Timmy Thomas adding another just a minute later. Ifeyani Wisdom Wisdom reduced the deficit for St George’s on 76 minutes but Timmy Thomas scored his second and sealed the issue from the penalty spot two minutes from time.

Swieqi United confirmed their status as league leaders when they easily defeated Birzebbugi­a St Peter’s by four goals to one at the Centenary Stadium on Sunday.

The goals came from Ion Alin Margaliton 39’, Sean Gatt Baldacchin­o on 45’, Nicky Schembri on 47’ and Kyle Muscat on 77’. Jordie Delia scored a consolatio­n goal for the Saints on 82’.

Fgura were dealt a huge blow to their promotion hopes when they suffered a surprise loss against strugglers Attard in the first match at the Luxol Stadium on Sunday. The winning goal came through Kurt Zahra on 21 minutes.

St Lucia kept up the pace at the top and regained sole second place with a hard fought victory over fellow challenger­s Gudja United in the second match at the Centenary Stadium on Saturday. Sebastian Perdomo scored the winning goal on 31 minutes.
