Indigenous trees planted at St Paul’s Catacombs

Heritage Malta teamed up with Grow 10 Trees Project and planted a number of indigenous trees at the St Paul’s Catacombs complex in Rabat.

These trees were donated by members of the Grow 10 Trees Project and were planted at this important archaeological site as part of Heritage Malta’s commitments to the environment. The trees: two bay trees, two olive trees and two għargħar, were all grown by the members who donated them. The species were carefully selected and planted in selected areas so that no damage to the underlying catacombs would be done by their roots.

The new trees were planted by Heritage Malta and Grow 10 Trees Project representatives.

The Grow 10 Trees has been created for the non-passive tree-huggers who are willing to grow and nurture at least 10 local trees, hence the name, though members are encouraged to grow many more than just ten trees. These will eventually be used for possible afforestation within the Maltese Archipelago once a suitable area is earmarked with the help of the government or other NGOs. The greater the number of active members, the larger the pool of trees to combat the shortage available for such projects. The Grow 10 Trees project is aimed at anyone who has a love for trees and is willing to find a very small corner in the garden, yard or even balcony to grow at least 10 local trees.

St Paul’s Catacombs are open daily from 9am to 5pm, last admission at 4.30pm.
