St Venera march on towards title

St Venera L. continued marching on to the Third Division title with a 4-1 demolition of Ghaxaq in the first match at the Charles Abela Stadium on Sunday.

Eddie Wileman scored a brace on 15’ and 50’ with William Camilleri adding another on 29’ to put the saints 3-0 ahead. Dean Agius reduced the deficit for Ghaxaq on 88’but Matthew Fenech scored the fourth for St Venera on 89’.

Xghajra Tornados cemented third place with another large victory over bottom club Ta’ Xbiex by four goals to nil in the second match at the Sirens Stadium on Saturday. The goals came from Simone Crisafulli­on 18’, Glenn Tanti on 20’, Deemer Cutajar on 35’ and Dylan Busuttil on 45’.

Mtarfa registered a surprise victory against neighbours Mdina Knights in the first game at the same stadium on Saturday. Chris Farrugia scored the winning goal on the half hour.

Zurrieq also registered a surprise victory when they defeated Msida St Joseph in the first match at the Sirens Stadium on Sunday. Tarek Ibrahim on 18 minutes and Joel Felice on 48 minutes scored for Zurrieq.

Mellieha confirmed second place with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Dingli Swallows courtesy of Jean Scholey on the stroke of half time.

Kirkop United beat Marsascala by the same scoreline to remain in the hunt for the playoff spot. Karl Caruana scored the winning goal on 67 minutes.
