Royal Malta Yacht Club winter season comes to a close

- Maria Vella-Galea

The Royal Malta Yacht Club’s Winter Coastal Race series was brought to a close recently with the last race of the Series taking place recently.

The last race of the series was won with a margin of just six seconds, by the crew of Fernando Grech on Kon Tiki.

A fleet of five boats left Marsamxett headed towards the Fairway buoy before being sent up north towards Għallis Cardinal Mark.

The RMYC Winter Coastal Race Series, took place on weekend afternoons and were intended to be fun and easy for all. Each race was scored separately so crews could join any one race. These type of races proved to be popular and the Club is planning on hosting a Spring series in May and June with racing taking place on Saturday afternoons, whilst a Summer series, scheduled for August and September, will consist of a series of mid-week afternoon races.

Now that the winter season is well and truly over, the club is looking forward to some more challenging racing and April will see the return of the Sport Boats Class and two longer and more challenging races on the club’s Racing calendar.

Sport Boats Class - 7 and 8 April

Next appointment for the Sport Boats Class will be on 7 and 8 April, when crews of boats falling within this Class will regroup at the Royal Malta Yacht Club for a weekend of short, round the cans races.

The Class will be organising a total of three races on Saturday and Sunday, with racing starting at 10.30am. A Prize Giving will take place on Sunday at approximately 4pm.

PV-IES Double Handed Round Malta Race - 14 April

First double handed race of the season, double handed racing is all about testing crew synergies and pushing one’s stamina to the limits as there is no time for any breathing space.

This Race will form part of a series of three shorthanded races to be held over the year for an annual Short Handed Trophy”

Racing typically starts off from Marsamxett Harbour, taking crews around the island of Malta to finish off at the starting point in Marsamxett.

Citadel Marzamemi Weekend regatta - 28 April

Considered to be a Club Classic, the Citadel Marzamemi Weekend regatta is the first offshore racing weekend of the year and is billed by many as the most eagerlyawaited event by crews and friends.

The fleet list boasts a list of regulars as well as some newcomers. Jamie Sammut, skipper of Unica and Overall Winner in the race up to Marzamemi last year is expected to take part and vying to retain the title.

Others such as the crews of Elusive 2, Xpresso, Janissah, and Maltese Falcon are some of the few that the Club expects to see on the starting line.
