Maltese teachers in Erasmus+ project

Four teachers from Theresa Nuzzo School, Marsa, joined other teachers from Ireland, Slovenia and Iceland for a threeday encounter in Maribor, Slovenia. The visit was part of the Erasmus+ programme in which 5 schools are taking part. Started last September and running through two scholastic years, the programme, called LATCH (Literacy at the Children’s Heart), aims to help teachers develop and share ideas about Literacy in schools.

On 20th March, the teachers were welcomed with a short programme of traditiona­l music, songs and dance by teachers and students at Oš Borcev za Severno Mejo School in Maribor. During the visit, the teachers were able to observe reading lessons and discussed ways how to improve their own.As part of the literacy strategy, the teachers visited a local library where the librarians shared some ideas about how they target various reading groups in the locality. A Maths workshop was also held.

Apart from the school workshops, the group was able to visit important and historical sites around Maribor, the second largest Slovenian city. They also visited Ljubljana, the capital city, and Bled with its famous castle and lake.

At the end of the course, certificat­es of participat­ion were presented to the participan­ts by Mr Saša Pelko, deputy mayor of Maribor and Ms Lučka Lazarec Šerbec, principal of the school.

In between visits, the teachers get a chance to practise the ideas discussed during the workshop and share them with their colleagues. The programme will continue with another workshop to be held in Reykjavik, Iceland in May.
