Żejtun religious heritage in stamps

-

The Żejtun Philatelic Group will start a series of stamps about the religious heritage around the streets of Żejtun, entitled Niċeċ iż-Żejtun. The first set of five personalised stamps (on one sheet) and five postcards will be issued on Monday, 30th April. The stamps can be bought from the Żejtun Local Council as a mint or with the stamp of the Żejtun branch office. This group in two years’ time, will be issue 25 stamps and complete this series.

In Żejtun there are more than 90 old niches that go back to 17th century. These niches enjoy a great devotion and have interesting stories behind them. Most of the niches have indulgences granted by different bishops, with the last one of Our Lady of Rosary granted by Archbishop Michael Gonzi at the time of the Second Vatican Council.

In 2015 the Żejtun Local Council organised an exhibition about the niches and statues of Żejtun and from that time the interest about the religious heritage of Żejtun gained a lot of popularity, especially since the town of Żejtun is one of the localities that one can find most niches after Qormi and Rabat.

The stamps and postcards of the first set of 5 depict: the niche of Our Lady of Lourdes in Lorenzo Gafà Street, Bir id-Deheb, the niche of Christ Crucifix in Taltas Street, the niche of Our Lady of Carmel in Good Counsel Alley, the niche of St Paul in Marsaxlokk Street, and the niche of Our Lady of the Rosary in St Catherine Street.

Bookings for first day cover will be accepted till Thursday, 2 April by an e-mail on chircop.sean@gmail.com or call on 2166 3866 or on 9920 3815.
