Application filed to continue restoration of Valletta fortifications
An application has been filed with the Planning Authority to continue restoring the Valletta fortifications.
The application, filed on behalf of government, seeks to restore: “Il-Foss tal-Belt, Triq il-Kavallier, Pjazza Kastilja, Triq Girolomo Cassar, Triq l-Assedju l-Kbir , Triq il-Lanċa, Triq Marsamxett, Triq San Bastjan, Triq San Nikola, Triq il-Mediterran, Triq il-Lvant, Taraġ Nix Mangiari, Daħlet Ġnien is-Sultan, Triq Sant’ Anton and, Xatt Lascaris.”
The application is a renewal of a previous application back in 2013, which also saw the restoration of parts of the Valletta fortifications.
In the 2013 application approval, which in itself was a renewal of a 2007 application, the Planning Authority upon approving the application noted that the architect/applicant had to inform the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage and the Director Environment Protection Directorate in writing at least two weeks before any works were taken in hand. “All monitoring works by the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage and the Environment Protection Directorate were to be at the expense of the applicant.”
It was also noted in the 2013 approved application that stone replacement, was to be kept to the minimum, and that the colour and texture of any replacement stone was to be as close as possible to the original. Any historically significant marks that were possibly discovered during restoration works, were to be preserved.
