Alex Pettett dominates the Elite race

The Road Championsh­ip organised by the Malta Cycling Federation came to an end last Sundaywith the third and last race Tal-Maqluba, Żurrieq/Qrendi.

In the Elite category, Alexander Pettett of Pro Action - Volata CT won the ten lap race for a 100km distance in 2:38:39.67. The second and third places were mostly decided by a photo finish as Pierre Borg - Mosta AF Sign Studio CC finished in 2:39:17.56, while Christian Formosa came in 2:39:17.60.

Marie Claire Aquilina of Team Greens again finished first in the Women's category when she made its seven laps of 70 KM distance, in 2:04:45.38. Another two cyclists from Team Greens finished on the podium - second placed Danica Bonello Spiteri (2:06:05.68) and third placed Michelle Vella Wood (2:34:36.11).

Isaac Spiteri of The Cyclists, once again won the juniors category when he ended his eight laps of an 80km distance in 1:53:51.48. Gianluca Camilleri of Birkirkara St. Joseph SC retired during the race.

The Masters 40+ category was won by Ivan Zammit of Birkirkara St. Joseph SC when he ended his seven laps (70 KM) in 1:52:29.60. Second and third placed were two cyclists from The Cyclist, Antoine Sultana (1:52:30.10) and Malcolm Cachia (1:52:37.27).

The Masters 50+ category was won by Mark Schembri of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC who ended his five laps in 1:20:43.88. He had a strong challenge from team mate Steve Mifsud (1:20:46.45). In third place came Joseph Micallef of The Cyclists who finished his race in 1:20:50.96.

The Under-16 category was won by Sean Enriquez of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC Micallef making his five laps of a 50km distance in 1:29:10.39. Close to him finished Mika Zammit of Agones SFC in 1:29:20.19.

The Girls Under-14 category was again won by Christina Spiteri of The Cyclists finishing her two laps of 20 KM in 0:35:10.32. Behind her ended Justine De Giorgio from the Mosta AF Sign Studio CC in 0:39:33.16.

Matthew Galea Pirotta Mosta AF Sign Studio CC won his third race consisting in three laps in the Boys Under-14 category in 0:53:06.54. Behind him, another two Mosta AF Sign Studio CC cyclists, Tristan Joseph Aquilina and Nathan Zammit finished second and third with respective times of 0:58:07.36 and 1:00:08.29.

After the races, Joe Bajada, Secretary General of the Malta Cycling Federation, assisted by President John Zammit, distribute­d the medals to the winners all of the various categories.
