Christian Formosa remains champion, Marie Claire Aquilina wins ladies title

The National Road Race Championsh­ip organised by the Malta Cycling Federation ended recently.

Christian Formosa of The Cyclists successful­ly defended the title of National Champion gaining a total of 510 points, achieved by winning the St. Paul’s race and a third place at San Martin and Tal-Maqluba.

In second place, with a total of 495 points, was his brother Maurice, a member of the same club of The Cyclists CC with 459 points. Third place went to Alexander Pettett Pro Action - CT Volata with a total of 470 points.

Marie Claire Aquilina of Team Greens, confirming her very good season becoming the Ladies champion with a maximum of 600 points. These points were acquired by winning all three races at St. Paul’s, St. Martin and at Tal-Maqluba.

Second, with a total of 485 points, was her colleague Michelle Vella Wood. Marion Pullicino, of Mosta of AF Sign Studio CC, finished third with a total of 315 points.

The successes for The Cyclists club continued even further as they won the Junior Championsh­ip in which Isaac Spiteri earned a maximum of 600 points with three wins. Second place went to Gianluca Camilleri of Birkirkara St. Joseph SC with 490 points, while the third place was obtained by Nicholas Vella of Agones SFC with 155 points.

In the Masters 40+ category, Malcolm Cachia of The Cyclists was the winner with 555 points gained from two wins at San Martin and St Paul’s and third place in Tal-Maqluba. Five points behind was the former champion Ivan Zammit of Birkirkara St Joseph SC, while third placed was Mario Attard of Team Greens with 450 points.

The 50+ Masters Championsh­ip saw the success of Mark Schembri of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC who finished with a maximum of 600 points. Steve Mifsud of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC finished behind with 505 points and Joseph Micallef of The Cyclists was third with 330 points.

The under 16 championsh­ip was won by Sean Enriquez of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC with 550 points obtained from a victory at TalMaqluba and second place at St Paul’s and San Martin.

Mika Zammit of Agones SFDC finished second with 330 points, while in the third position were two cyclists of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC, Nikol Micallef and Malcolm Vassallo, both with 200 points.

Christina Spiteri of The Cyclists gained three victories in the under 14 Girls Championsh­ip with a maximum of 600 points. In second and third positions ended Justine De Giorgio and Bettina Falzon, both of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC with 525 and 310 points respective­ly.

Matthew Galea Pirotta of Mosta of AF Sign Studio CC finished first in the under 14 years Boys category with a maximum of 600 points, followed by two other cyclists of the same Mosta club, Luke Nathan Joseph Camilleri and Zammit with 470 and 435 points respective­ly.
