Teenager Kliment Kolesnikov wins 3rd gold

Russian teenage swimmer Kliment Kolesnikov won his third gold medal at the European Championsh­ips by dominating the 100-metrebacks­troke yesterday.

Kolesnikov finished in 52.53 seconds after holding off a late challenge by fellow Russian Evgeny Rylov, who was 0.21 behind. Greece’s Apostolos Christou came more than a second behind in 53.72 for bronze.

On Saturday, Kolesnikov improved the world record in the 50metre backstroke to 24 seconds, a day after triumphing with the Russian team in the 4x100-metre freestyle relay.

Rampant Russia show they are world’s best in synchronis­ed swimming with double gold

Russia underlined their domination of synchronis­ed swimming as they captured the technical solo and techinal team gold medals at the Scotstoun Sports Campus yesterday.

World champion Svetlana Kolesniche­nko eased to the solo title and her team-mates proved much too strong for the opposition in the team event.

The crowds produced noisy cheer for Spain and Italy in the battle for bronze. Spain were up first and scored 89.8716 points but the Italians overtook them with 90.3553 points.

Jeremy Desplanche­s (SUI) won the gold medal in the men’s 200m individual medley in 1:57.04. Philip Heintz (GER) took silver and Max Litchfield (GBR) bronze.

Great Britain won the gold medal in the 4x100m mixed medley relay in a European record 3:40.18. Russia took silver and Italy bronze.
