Triathlon Champion Graham Borg sets new Maltese Ironman 70.3 record

-

Current National Triathlon Champion and Mosta Tri Team athlete Graham Borg has just broken his previously set record in the Ironman 70.3 distance (1.9km swim, 90km cycle, 21km run) at the recently held Ironman 70.3 Gdynia.

The Baltic Port City of Gdynia hosted nearly two thousand athletes. The swim, which nearly saw it being cancelled and replaced by a 6km run due to adverse water conditions in the days running up to the race, took place in the Baltic Sea, then took on the challenging, one-loop bike course leading through the Kashubia region before heading back to the city centre for the half Marathon which finished along the beach.

Borg completed the 113km race in a time of 4 hours, 17minutes and 27seconds beating the record time of 4 hours 21 minutes and 22 seconds he set in Turkey last year. It's Malta's new national record. Borg narrowly missed out on third place by a mere 30 seconds but his timings saw him finish in 4th place out of 398 athletes in his Age Group category and 39th, overall out of a field of 1927 athletes.

Despite his disappointment at missing out on a podium, Borg saw him qualify once again for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships which will take place in Nice, France in 2019. Borg’s next commitment will be the 2018 World Championships in South Africa for which he qualified for last year.

“Gdynia was preparation for the forthcoming World Championships. It has been a long competitive season but despite all the races, I felt strong throughout the race in all the three segments. The conditions were quite favourable except for some rain during the run” explained Borg at the end of the Race. “Breaking my own record certainly makes up for missing out on the podium and fills me with motivation to do even better in the next race”
