PD ‘now even more interested’ in participating in Waste Management Committee
Partit Demokratiku (PD) said yesterday that it had wanted to nominate, and was still interested in nominating a representative on the Waste Management Committee in order to be in a position to participate actively in any decisions taken.
“Unfortunately, Wasteserv has been notoriously used as a political ball by both major parties and has never been allowed to work without political interference, and more so, at present,” PD said in a statement.
In the wake of the Magħtab fire last Friday, PD said that, apart from calling for a public inquiry, it is also questioning the wisdom of Opposition leader Adrian Delia, “whose reasons for refusing to nominate somebody on the Waste Management Committee sound weak.”
The urgency of Malta’s waste problem has been laid bare by the incident at Magħtab, PD said. “The fact remains that Delia is not accepting his own share of the responsibility, as he refused to contribute towards Malta’s waste management solutions when offered the opportunity.”
“Partit Demokratiku had nominated one of its MPs, Godfrey Farrugia, to fill the vacant spot on the Waste Management Committee on behalf of the Opposition, since Delia refused to appoint one from the PN side, he also blocked this decision. Similarly, Delia had left the Opposition seats on both the Commission Against Corruption and the ERA vacant, until PD suggested its own nominees, prompting action.”
“Could this incident have been avoided, had there been an Opposition MP on the Waste Management Committee?” PD asked.
