Removal of Telgħa t’Alla u Ommu bottleneck underway

-

Infrastructure Malta said yesterday that was widening part of T’Alla u Ommu Hill in Naxxar to eliminate the bottleneck currently restricting its southbound carriageway to one lane.

T’Alla u Ommu Hill is one of the principal road links between the northern and central parts of Malta, linking St Paul’s Bay, Magħtab and Burmarrad to Mosta and the Birguma area of Naxxar. The topmost part of the two-lane southbound carriageway of the road up this hill currently narrows to one lane. This bottleneck causes delays, increases accident risks and other difficulties as road users are forced to merge into one lane before approaching the Birguma roundabout.

“Through a project launched last week, Infrastructure Malta is widening this narrow part of the carriageway to open up the second lane and improve its approach to the roundabout. This upgrade includes the construction of the new lane’s foundations, rebuilding the road’s footpaths and walls to accommodate the two-lane alignment and a new asphalt road surface,” the agency said in a statement.

The southbound carriageway was closed this morning, between midnight and 4am.

The upgrade is scheduled to be completed by the end of the month.

“Through another project in the same area, Infrastructure Malta is currently also rebuilding Triq talBalal, the main road link Naxxar and San Ġwann. This busy road is being upgraded with new lanes in both directions, new road safety systems for different modes of travel, and with the re-alignment of its four roundabout junctions. This investment will increase the road’s capacity, safety and efficiency, while reducing delays and vehicle emissions caused by long queuing times at the existing congested junctions.”
