Transport report: Emissions increase by 18% between 2005 and 2016 Sea Transport

● Traffic casualties increase by 8.2% over previous year

In 2016 total CO2 equivalent emissions increased by 17.9 per cent from 2005 levels, according to the report Transport Statistics, published yesterday by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

Of all greenhouse gases, CO2 comprised by far the largest share at 98.0 per cent.

In 2016, gross inland petrol consumptio­n amounted to 103.34 million litres, of which 98.5 per cent was used for road transport.

Gross inland diesel consumptio­n was higher, totalling 124.38 million litres, of which 90.6 per cent was used for road transport.

Almost all 7.68 million litres of Bio Diesel were used for road transport. Conversely, usage of LPG in road transport was only 1.7 per cent of the total gross LPG consumptio­n of 35.04 million litres.

In 2016, road transport emissions saw increases from Biofuel (33.6%), LPG (50%) and Diesel (1.01%) over 2015, while emissions from Petrol remained at par with 2015.

Compared to 2015, total estimated emissions by road transport increased by 1.5 per cent in 2016.

The report also found that, in 2016 the number of reported traffic accidents decreased by 3.1 per cent over the previous year, with 38.1 per cent of these accidents recorded in the Northern Harbour.

Traffic casualties increased by 8.2 per cent over 2015. Injuries sustained by 11 drivers, three passengers, eight pedestrian­s and one cyclist proved fatal.

The stock of licensed motor vehicles increased at an average net rate of 33 vehicles per day. Passenger cars accounted for 78.8 per cent of total licensed motor vehicles but motorcycle­s registered the largest increase at 16 per cent over 2015. More than half of the newly licensed motor vehicles were ‘used’.

60.7 per cent of total licensed vehicles had petrol engines. In 2010 the share of petrol engines was 62.3 per cent (the share of diesel engines increased by 1.2 percentage points over seven years).

Slightly more than 40 per cent of total driving license holders were female (in 2010, the share was almost 39 per cent).

A total of 281,195 traffic-related contravent­ions were issued by police, wardens and TM.

Speed camera contravent­ions totalled 73,257 or an average of 200 per day.

A total of 256 vehicles were stolen (70 per cent were passenger cars). Public Transport commuters totalled 43,253,238.

The number of licensed motor vehicles per 1,000 residents went up to 780 from 770 in 2015.

Gozo and Comino district registered the highest number of vehicles per 1,000 residents at 1,025, whereas the Northern Harbour registered the lowest ratio with 689 vehicles per 1,000 residents.

Air Transport

In 2016, passenger traffic at the MIA increased by 10.5 per cent compared to 2015.

The UK and Italy remain the two most popular destinatio­ns in terms of total passenger movements, but the increases in passengers movement over 2015 were 5.4 and 15.1 per cent respective­ly.

In 2016, the stock of vessels registered under the Maltese flag increased by 2.7 per cent.

62.0 per cent (486) of the total newly registered vessels were pleasure yachts.

Cruise liner embarkatio­ns from Malta and landings in Malta decreased by 19.9 per cent and 17.3 per cent respective­ly over 2015.

Increases of 8.2 and 8.3 per cent were registered in the number of vehicles and passengers that crossed between Malta and Gozo respective­ly.
