France opts for clay to take on Croatia in Davis Cup final

France has chosen clay as the surface for the Davis Cup final against Croatia as it bids to win back-to-back titles in the team competitio­n.

The final will be held at the 26,429-capacity Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille from Nov. 2325, under a retractabl­e roof.

It will be the third time in five years that Lille has hosted the final after France lost Switzerlan­d in 2014 at the same venue and won the title against Belgium last year.

France beat Spain on an indoor hardcourt in the semifinals this month, while Croatia played on clay at home as they ousted the United States.

Wozniacki, Kerber, Kvitova reach Wuhan third round

Second-ranked Caroline Wozniacki reached the third round of a tournament for the first time since June at the Wuhan Open on Tuesday, while No. 1 Simona Halep lost in straight sets.

Wozniacki defeated Swedish qualifier Rebecca Peterson 6-4, 6-1, making just nine unforced errors to Peterson's 36. In the evening session, 2016 runner-up Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia ousted Halep 6-0, 7-5, and Czech qualifier Katerina Siniakova upset defending champion Caroline Garcia 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4). Halep said before the tournament that she was struggling with a back problem.

Wozniacki made early exits in her last five tournament­s, including three first-round losses. She last reached the third round at the pre-Wimbledon warmup in Eastbourne, where she won.

She next faces Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig from Puerto Rico, who beat Aliaksandr­a Sasnovich 6-2, 6-2.

Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber beat Madison Keys 6-0, 4-1 after the American retired due to a left knee injury. In the round of 16, Kerber lined up Ashleigh Barty, last year's finalist.

Two-time Wuhan Open winner Petra Kvitova cruised past Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia 6-3, 6-4.

Also on Tuesday, two-time Wuhan Open winner Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic cruised past Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia 6-3, 6-4, while avenging a stunning upset to Krunic in the third round of the 2014 US Open, their only previous meeting.

Murray reaches 2nd round of Shenzhen Open as Zhang retires

Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the Shenzhen Open on Tuesday when Chinese wild-card entry Zhang Zhizhen had to retire in the third set.

Zhang took advantage of Murray's inconsiste­nt serve to win the second set but started limping in the third and retired when trailing 6-3, 6-7 (3), 4-2.

Murray faced 10 break points in the match, saving eight of them. It was his first match since losing in the second round of the U.S. Open last month.

Murray will next face defending champion and top-seeded David Goffin, who received a first-round bye.

Sixth-seeded Denis Shapovalov of Canada also advanced, beating Ilya Ivashka of Belarus 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in a match that was suspended for than three hours because of rain.

Top-seeded Begu knocked out of Tashkent Open

Top-seeded Irina-Camelia Begu lost in the first round at the Tashkent Open to Kateryna Kozlova on Tuesday.

Romania's Begu held serve just three times as she was swept aside 6-3, 6-2 by her Ukrainian opponent, who next plays Fiona Ferro of France.

Another seeded player fell as the Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva dismissed thirdseede­d Tamara Zidansek 6-1, 64 in their first-round match. Seeking her first tour singles title since her comeback, Zvonareva moves on to play qualifier Fanny Stollar.

Second-seeded Vera Lapko had few problems with her firstround opponent Bojana Jovanovski Petrovic, winning 6-1, 6-3 to set up a second-round meeting with Ivana Jorovic.
