Sea debris collection device to be installed at Vittoriosa yacht marina

Second Seabin to be installed in Malta’s marinas

-

A second Seabin – a device that can filter up to 25,000 litres of seawater an hour and catch up to 1.5 kilos of marine debris a day – is being installed in Malta’s harbours.

The device is being installed at the Grand Harbour Marina in Vittoriosa.

The first device was installed earlier this year at the Marina di Valletta, in Pieta`.

The inauguration of the second such device will be held this morning by the Von der Heyden Group, Cugó Gran Macina Grand Harbour, Hammett’s Collection, The Grand Harbour Marina, Palumbo, Bradbury Yacht Concierge Services, S&D Yachts and environmental NGO Żibel, which has introduced the technology to Malta together with Strand Marine.

The Seabin is a floating debris interception device designed to be installed in the water of marinas, Yacht Clubs, ports, and any water body with a calm environment and services available.

It is manufactured from recycled material, and can catch an estimated 1.5kgs of floating debris per day including micro-plastics up to 2mm small. Over the course of a year, this would come up to half a ton of debris.

The device moves up and down with the range of tide collecting all floating rubbish. Water is sucked in from the surface and passes through a catch bag inside, with a submersible pump capable of displacing 25,000 litres per hour. The water is then pumped back into the marina leaving litter and debris trapped in the catch bag to be disposed of properly.

The Seabin also has the potential to collect a percentage of oils and pollutants floating on the water surface.

As part of #Zibel’s long-term clean-up strategy for the Maltese islands, profits from the Seabin sales go towards educational material for schools and the general public.
