Batshuayi double helps Belgium beat Iceland 2-0

-

Michy Batshuayi proved a more than capable replacement for the injured Romelu Lukaku on Thursday when he scored twice as Belgium beat Iceland 2-0 to maintain its 100 percent record in the inaugural UEFA Nations League.

After 65 minutes of pounding the Iceland defense, captain Eden Hazard found Thomas Meunier on the right and the Paris Saint-Germain winger crossed for Batshuayi to slot the ball home.

The second goal was even easier for the on-loan Valencia striker, as he tapped the ball into the net after Hans Vanaken's shot had rebounded to him.

Belgium has nine points from three games in Group 2 of League A, three ahead of Switzerland.

A draw against the Swiss on Sunday will be enough to take Belgium through to the Final Four in June.

Iceland lost all 4 matches and is relegated.

Belgium and Iceland were without several first-choice players on Thursday, but the home team showed it has a lot more strength in depth and dominated throughout at an increasingly foggy King Baudouin Stadium.

Axel Witsel also became only the third Belgian to win 100 caps.

Croatia beats Spain 3-2 to throw open Nations League group

Defender Tin Jedvaj scored his second goal of the game in injury time to earn Croatia a 3-2 win over Spain on Thursday, a result that left both teams and group rival England still in the running to reach the UEFA Nations League finals.

Croatia's win came two months after it was crushed 6-0 by Spain, its worst ever loss, in Seville.

Spain is top of League A, Group 4 with six points. England and Croatia have four points before they meet at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The group winner advances to the Final Four tournament in June.

With Croatia needing a victory to keep its hopes alive, the World Cup runner-up pinned Spain in its area in the final moments and Jedvaj scored on the rebound after goalkeeper David de Gea had blocked a shot.

Earlier, Andrej Kramaric opened the scoring for the home team in the 54th minute, only for Dani Ceballos to equalize two minutes later.

Croatia went back ahead in the 69th when Jedvaj headed in a cross from Luka Modric, but Sergio Ramos leveled for Spain with a penalty eight minutes later after Sime Vrsaljko handled.

The team that finishes bottom of the group will be relegated to League B.

Austria 0-0 Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina got the point they needed for promotion while the result relegated Northern Ireland.

The visitors were lively throughout in attack, with Edin Višća and Haris Duljević both denied by the fingertips of Heinz Linder, while Edin Džeko dragged an effort wide and Toni Šunjić headed over.

Marko Arnautović and Julian Baumgartlinger had chances for Austria, and while their promotion hopes are over, the point takes them out of reach of Sunday's hosts Northern Ireland.

Greece 1-0 Finland

Finland surrendered their 100% record in the group but were still able to celebrate promotion in Athens.

Albin Granlund's 25th-minute own goal gave Greece the lead but Finland, who knew a onegoal defeat would seal promotion due to their head-to-head record against opponents who were the only side that could catch them, held firm.

Hungary 2-0 Estonia

Estonia suffered relegation after their fourth defeat in five matches in the group.

Hungary were in the ascendancy from the moment Willi Orban headed in an eighthminute corner.

Ádám Szalai nodded in a second and the Magyars will finish second if they beat Finland on Sunday and Greece lose against Estonia.

Latvia picked up their first UEFA Nations League point away from home in Astana.
