Charlton Debono, Lisa Marie Bezzina triumph at Il-Maqluba road race

The Malta AAA organised the second race in the 2018/2019 Road Running League at IlMaqluba last Saturday, over the same route used for the first race.

The Men’s 5km race was again keenly contested, with three runners – Charlton Debono, Dillon Cassar and Luke Micallef still bunched together at the last kilometre. At this point, Charlton Debono (Athletix Gozo) unleashed a strong attack to win the race in a fast time of 15:30.

The Raptorz runner Dillon Cassar was hot on Charlton’s heels to win second place in 15:33 while the Pembroke athlete Luke Micallef, who won the first League race, crossed the line in third position in a time of 15:37.

In the women’s race, Lisa Maria Bezzina (Pembroke) notched her second victory of the League with a fast time of 17:20 while Mona Lisa Camilleri (AS Libertas) proved that she was in excellent shape by finishing in 17:31, amere 11 seconds behind. Third place went to Roberta Schembri (St Patrick’s AC) who clocked a strong time of 17:52

On the day, the Men’s Team event was won by Pembroke AC with 34 points while Mellieha AC with 45 points were a close second.

The Women’s Team event was won by St Patrick’s AC who scored 13 points. Pembroke AC were second with 23 points.

The next race in the League will be held at Bugibba on 6 January 2019.
