Silence is not the answer
In a statement on the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women, the Ministry of European Affairs and Equality called for media outlets to join up in a campaign against gender-based violence and domestic violence.
“In spite of progressive legislation implemented in the last year to grant authorities the tools to protect victims, the challenge to change the culture and mentality of tolerating domestic violence and gender-based violence still persists.
“This challenged cannot be overcome by the government alone, it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to stop it, offer comfort to victims, and give them courage to report any form of violence. Particularly because this crime is amongst the lowest reported in our country.
“In this context it is important to convey the message that violence takes many forms, psychological or economic violence amongst others, which are punishable by severe penalties.
“Thus, the message is a clear one - do not remain in an abusive relationship, the law protects you.
“During the 16 days of activist against domestic violence and gender-based violence, the front of the Auberge d’Aragon will be illuminated with orange lighting. This is consistent with the theme chosen by the United Nations for this international campaign “Orange the World: #HearMeToo.”
