Liverpool beats Burnley 3-1 to stay on Man City’s coat tails

-

Juergen Klopp had to bring rested stars off the bench to ensure Liverpool came from behind to beat Burnley 3-1 in the Premier League on Wednesday and move back within two points of leader Manchester City.

After Liverpool gambled by making seven changes, Jack Cork put Burnley ahead in the 54th minute.

James Milner equalized in the 62nd and Klopp sent on Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, who converted from close range within four minutes of his arrival.

Xherdan Shaqiri completed the scoring in stoppage time as Liverpool maintained its unbeaten start to the league campaign.

Klopp's big call was in making sweeping changes from the derby win over Everton, giving Sunday's match-winner Divock Origi his first Premier League start since May 2017. That was also the last time Liverpool started without attacking trio Salah, Firmino and Sadio Mane, who was out injured.

Everton held to 1-1 draw by Newcastle in Premier League

Brazil forward Richarlison canceled out Salomon Rondon's early strike to earn Everton a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Newcastle grabbed the lead against the run of play in the 19th minute after Jacob Murphy beat Seamus Coleman on the left to curl in a low cross that Rondon met with a sliding finish at the back post.

Visiting goalkeeper Martin Dubravka produced a series of superb saves but couldn't do anything about Everton's equalizer in the 38th, with Gylfi Sigurdsson's corner rebounding off two Newcastle defenders before falling at the feet of Richarlison to sweep home.

Everton's pace dropped in the second half as Newcastle sat deep to protect a point and move further away from the bottom three. Having heard yet more media speculation of a potential takeover in recent days, United's fans at least had something tangible to take home.

Chelsea beaten at Wolves, loses more ground in title race

Chelsea lost more ground in the Premier League title race by squandering an early lead to go down 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday.

Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota scored goals in a four-minute span around the hour mark to condemn Chelsea to a second loss in three games, after a recent 3-1 defeat at Tottenham.

Chelsea is 10 points behind unbeaten leader Manchester City and could now be in a race just to finish in the top four to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Maurizio Sarri's side took the lead in the 18th minute when Ruben Loftus-Cheek's goalbound effort deflected inside the near post off the head of Wolves defender Conor Coady.

It was another good result against a top-flight heavyweight for Wolves, who have also drawn against Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal.
