PD reaffirms call for ‘proper and independent investigations’ into Panama Papers revelations
Partit Demokratiku yesterday reaffirmed its position that Minister Konrad Mizzi, Office of the Prime Minister Chief of Staff Keith Schembri and all those implicated in the Panama Papers saga will only have the suspicion of corruption lifted from them after an independent police investigation take place.
The party said, “This is a more serious a necessity than ever for Malta’s image and the health of its democracy in light of the fact of the libel cases dropped by Minister Konrad Mizzi, coincidentally just as Nexia BT’s Karl Cini was set to testify.
“It is clear that Minister Mizzi was trying to prevent the truth from coming out by dropping the libel cases.
“This follows an unfortunate similar pattern whereby important information never makes it to the public eye, such as the mobile data from Minister Chris Cardona’s phone which would have proven his physical location in relation to the prostitution claims.”
MEP candidate Dr Anthony Buttigieg stated, “Our legal system is being abused and exploited to give the mistaken impression that these politicians have cleared their names, when nothing of the sort is actually taking place.”
“It is evident that accused politicians are abusing the law antilegally, and are ignoring its spirit, to try and get away with their misdeeds,” states MEP candidate Martin Cauchi Inglott. “Malta’s integrity must not remain tarnished by politically irresponsible people in office.”
The part insisted that only an independent and proper police investigation without political influence can clear their names, and Partit Demokratiku will continue to call for truth and justice until a clear verdict on their guilt is delivered.
“It is clear that government is disrespecting the courts and our legal system. This strengthens PD’s call for the imminent introduction of a rule of law control system within our Constitution.”
