SPP 2019 Studen

- Jacquie Cremona Crossey

The Student Placement Programme (SPP) is now in full swing of it’s 11th edition. This programme allows participating students who are studying IT or related subjects from an MQF level 4 upwards to apply technical and theoretical knowledge acquired within a classroom environment to be applied in a hands-on practical working environment within Private Industry, Public Service, Public Sector and NGOs.

Over the past 5 years, our programme has seen over 1,600 students successfully gain placement through an investment of over €2.5 Million. This year alone a further investment of €800,000 allocated for the sole purpose of the student salaries has enabled over 380 students to effectively have a placement experience over an 11-week period this summer. These placements were spread across various sectors with 45 participating companies from within the Private Sector, 47 entities within the Public Service and Public Sector and 8 NGOs.

Last October MITA launched an Emerging Technologies Lab – an innovative space in which MITA employees, students and Public Sector employees can learn about and “Tinker” with a wide range of emerging technologies such as Blockchain & DLT, virtual and augmented reality, 3D printing and 3D scanning, microcontrollers and IOT, hand tacking and gesture control technology and robotics. Bearing this in mind and, in order to entice students in furthering their studies in these areas, this year’s SPP student summer event was focused on some of these emerging technologies. The event was held on the of July 10th, at Esplora Science Centre in Kalkara.

What would normally be an ordinary day at the office, was instead spent in a fun environment, using the technology with the purpose of exploring some of the potential of the various Emerging Technologies.
